Poetry 365: #1 – August excerpts

Although I have still been keeping up with my yearly poetry quota — for the most part at least, since I’m a bit behind on making it to my goal of another 175 poems for 2011 and may shoot for something more modest like 125 — it’s all been occurring “behind the scenes,” so to speak.

So from here on out I’d like to daylight a little of my struggle with the form on a day-by-day (or week-by-week) basis, whether that’s posting a recent excerpt or two, revisiting older works, sharing something inspirational or doing a video/audio recording of me reading.

In that vein, here’s a brief wrapup of choice August poem excerpts. I’m sure you can tell ‘place’ has been a big influence of late:

Constrained by space defined for it
squeezed at both ends until an arch
forms; rusted-red-colored revealing
with upstretched palms the parlor
trick singing from steel beasts

Pocket poem:

spaced out
for public spaces to be
where pace and plot slow
to allow existence to breathe
as breath exists creating space
for itself in exultant expiration

Last and first:

Out in the wings, calmness seems the center yet
focuses in the gentle deliberations
of the crowd. Speed determined
by level of squintiness. Scores walking
by like set extras, repetitively and with renewed
enthusiasm each time as if
the first.

On the plane where differing travel modes enact
Social strata of past eras, jockeying for dominance above
The stuttering light playing through shuttered bridge beams
That makes the water wobble like windswept dunes
